About Time Card Tools

Time Card Tools is a small set of free calculators for people who are paid by the hour in the United States: add up the hours on a time card, check overtime, convert minutes to decimal hours and estimate gross pay before taxes.

What the tools do

How the calculations work

Every result is arithmetic on the times and rates you enter. The rules behind the options are taken from official sources:

  • Weekly overtime. Hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at no less than 1.5 times the regular rate under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (29 U.S.C. § 207(a)(1); U.S. Department of Labor: Overtime Pay). Each workweek is calculated on its own; two weeks are never averaged (29 CFR 778.104).
  • Daily and California overtime. The California option applies time and a half after 8 hours in a day, double time after 12, and the seventh-consecutive-day rules in California Labor Code § 510 (see also the California DLSE: Overtime FAQ). The daily option applies 1.5× after 8 hours a day or 40 a week without counting the same hour twice.
  • Rounding. Optional rounding to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour or quarter hour follows the practices described in 29 CFR 785.48(b). Quarter-hour rounding is commonly called the 7-minute rule.
  • Breaks. Short rest breaks count as hours worked (29 CFR 785.18); bona fide meal periods, ordinarily 30 minutes or more, generally do not (29 CFR 785.19).
  • Regular rate. When a shift differential is added, it is included in the regular rate used for overtime (29 CFR 778.207(b); 29 CFR 778.115).

You choose the overtime rule yourself. The site does not guess your state, because state rules change and some workers are exempt or covered by a union contract.

Your data stays in your browser

All calculations run in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server. The time card and timesheet calculators save your entries in this browser's local storage so you can come back later; use their Clear button or clear this site's data to remove them. See the privacy policy for how ads and cookies work on this site.

Not legal or payroll advice

Results are estimates of gross pay before taxes and deductions. They do not calculate taxes, withholding or benefits, and they are not legal, tax or payroll advice. If your paycheck does not match, check your employer's written policy or contact the U.S. Department of Labor or your state labor agency.
