How to use the military time calculator
- To convert time to military time, type the standard time in the left box (for example
6:45) and choose AM or PM. You can also type645p. - To read a 24-hour time, type it in the right box with or without the colon:
1845,18:45or even18for an exact hour. - Read the converted time and the minutes after midnight under each box. The results update as you type.
12 hour to 24 hour: the rules
Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23 and always uses four digits, with no colon and no AM or PM. The conversion follows four rules:
- 12:00 AM to 12:59 AM (just after midnight) → 0000 to 0059.
- 1:00 AM to 11:59 AM → same hour with a leading zero: 0100 to 1159.
- 12:00 PM to 12:59 PM (noon hour) → 1200 to 1259.
- 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM → add 12 to the hour: 1300 to 2359.
Going from military time to standard time is the reverse: a 24 hour to 12 hour converter subtracts 12 from hours 13 to 23. Times are often spoken in hundreds, so 1500 is "fifteen hundred" and 0800 is "zero eight hundred". Midnight can be written 0000 or, at the end of a day, 2400; this converter treats both as 12:00 AM.
Military time chart for minutes
Only the hour changes between the two systems; the last two digits are the minutes in both. Here is the 1 PM hour in 15-minute steps:
| Standard | Military | Minutes after midnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1:00 PM | 1300 | 780 |
| 1:15 PM | 1315 | 795 |
| 1:30 PM | 1330 | 810 |
| 1:45 PM | 1345 | 825 |
Minutes after midnight are handy for subtracting times: hours × 60 + minutes. Note that 1330 does not mean 13.30 hours of work; as a length of time, 30 minutes is 0.5 hour, which the minutes to decimal converter covers.
Worked example: timesheet military time
Some time clocks and timesheets print punches in military time. Say a shift reads 0645 in and 1515 out.
- Convert to standard time: 0645 is 6:45 AM; 1515 is 3:15 PM.
- Convert to minutes after midnight: 6 × 60 + 45 = 405 and 15 × 60 + 15 = 915.
- Subtract: 915 − 405 = 510 minutes, which is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours.
For a night shift such as 2200 to 0600, add 24 hours (1,440 minutes) to the end time before subtracting, which gives 8 hours. The hours calculator does that step for you, and the time card calculator accepts 24-hour entries for a whole week.
